As a teenager, he moved to Beijing to study Mandarin and later pursued cinematography at the Beijing Film Academy. After a formative decade working in the Chinese film industry, he relocated to Los Angeles, where he completed his MFA in cinematography at the American Film Institute.
His work has screened at major festivals worldwide, including Tribeca, Camerimage, San Sebastián, Locarno, and Busan. He is an ASC Graduate Award recipient and a Film Independent Project Involve Cinematography Fellow.
Joewi’s approach to image-making is spiritual and informed by a life lived between cultures — infusing every frame with soul and authenticity while never losing sight of the story.
